February Focus: Heart-healthy Wellness

February is American Heart Month, the perfect time to learn about ways you can support your heart health.

Although your physical heart is only about the size of your fist, it keeps your entire body alive. From it blood moves out to all parts of your body carrying the nutrients, oxygen, hormones and enzymes that are necessary for it to continue living. These sources of the body’s life must keep flowing out from the heart without faltering if the body is to remain healthy.

As the most active muscle of the body, the heart requires proper nutrition. Research has shown that in addition to a healthy diet and exercise, supplementation of Omega 3’s and CoQ10 are among the many supplements that can help support heart health, especially when we are not eating properly.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a naturally occurring component present in living cells. Its physiological function is to act as an essential cofactor for ATP production, and to perform important antioxidant activities in the body and is necessary for a healthy heart and circulatory system. We may need to add this supplement to our diet if we are not eating properly, and especially if we are over 40.

Fish oil is a good source of omega-3 EFAs, being one of the most well known sources and it is essential for heart health. However, there are many other food sources, including plant-based food sources, which are, also, rich in EFAs. As you tour and shop our store, be on the lookout to find and include some of the following food sources to add to your diet for a plant-based healthy heart diet.

Plant-based food sources of Omega-3 EFAs

  • Flaxseeds

  • Flaxseed oil

  • Walnuts

  • Chia seeds

  • Tofu

  • Cruciferous vegetables

  • Seaweed

  • Hemp seeds

Food Sources of CoQ10:

  • Organ meats: Heart, liver and kidney.

  • Some muscle meats: Pork, beef and chicken.

  • Fatty fish: Trout, herring, mackerel and sardine.

  • Vegetables: Spinach, cauliflower and broccoli.

  • Fruit: Oranges and strawberries.

  • Legumes: Soybeans, lentils and peanuts.

  • Nuts and seeds: Sesame seeds and pistachios.
